Latvia to amend its biofuels legislation

13.05.2017

The Economy Ministry of Latvia has proposed a number of amendments to its biofuel legislation with the aim of increasing the share of renewable energy in transport and meet the EU Renewable Energy Directive target for member states to achieve at least 10% renewable energy use in transport by 2020.

The ministry proposes to:

  • Introduce sustainability provisions to make biofuels used on the market compatible with the EU 2020 target.
  • Modify tax waivers for high biofuels blends and pure biofuels, mainly E85 and B100.
  • Exclude hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO) from the biofuels quota.
  • Suspend the blending of biodiesel during the winter months (Nov/Mar).
