More food than fuel: ePURE members’ biorefineries produced more food and feed than ethanol in 2022

26.06.2023

EU renewable ethanol refineries produced more food and animal feed than renewable fuel in 2022, according to new audited data.

The European renewable ethanol industry’s important contribution to EU food security often goes overlooked or misrepresented in the debate over biofuels – which often focuses on 'food vs fuel' misinformation. The ethanol production process creates high-protein, high-quality animal feed in addition to GHG-saving fuel ethanol and captured biogenic CO2. This domestic production – which offsets Europe’s protein deficit – is a win-win for Europe’s energy independence and food security.

The new data on ethanol production was compiled from ePURE members and certified by auditing firm Copartner. ePURE members produced more food and feed co-products (5.9 million tonnes of commercial product) than renewable ethanol (4.50 million tonnes) – more food than fuel.

The audit also showed another record-high GHG-saving performance of ePURE members’ ethanol – 78.4% compared to fossil petrol – confirming that ethanol production contributes to EU food security and offsets fossil fuel use.
